The Early Years
LSU's first appearance in the CWS was in 1986, under the guidance of Bertman. Although they didn't take home the championship that year, it was a major accomplishment for the program. In 1991, however, the Tigers would win their first national championship, with Bertman at the helm. This victory would be the start of something truly special for the LSU baseball program.
The Tigers Dynasty Begins
Following their first championship win in 1991, LSU went into "dynasty mode" and took home four more CWS titles over the next decade. The Tigers won back-to-back championships in 1996 and 1997, showcasing their dominance and establishing themselves as the team to beat in college baseball. They would go on to win their fifth championship in 2000, capping off a remarkable run of success under Bertman's leadership.
The Bertman Legacy
Skip Bertman's impact on the LSU baseball program cannot be understated. His leadership and coaching transformed the Tigers into a powerhouse program that has consistently been a threat in college baseball. In fact, in a Baseball America poll published in 1999, Bertman was voted the 2nd greatest college baseball coach of the 20th century, behind only USC's Rod Dedeaux.
Post-Bertman Era
After Bertman retired in 2001, the Tigers continued to make appearances in the CWS, but it would be several years before they would win another championship. It wasn't until 2009 that LSU would take home their sixth CWS title, under the guidance of coach Paul Mainieri. Since then, LSU has made several more appearances in the CWS, but has not yet been able to secure another championship win.
Tigers Are Still On The Prowl
As you can see, the LSU baseball program has a storied history when it comes to the College World Series. From their first appearance in 1986 to their five championships under Bertman's leadership, the Tigers have cemented themselves as one of the top programs in college baseball. While it's been several years since their last championship win, LSU remains a competitive force in the sport and will undoubtedly continue to make appearances in the CWS for years to come. For LSU fans, the future is bright, and the legacy of their program is one to be proud of.
